Tournament and Pool Formats

There are 42 teams competing for 32 spots in the 2019 Power League. Competition will take place over 2 weekends in January. All teams will be in action starting on Sunday 1/6/19 and continue their play on 1/13/19. Pool assignments will be uploaded shortly.

Day 1 - 1/6/19
42 teams will be placed into 10 pools. There will be 8 pools of 4 teams, and 2 pools of 5 teams. We will do our best to seed the pools as best as possible to create the competitive balance needed. All day 1 pools will be held at Kekuhaupiʻo and Keawe gyms on the Kamehameha-Kapālama campus.

The 1st place team in the 4 team pools will advance to the Gold Divisional Seeding on Sunday, 1/13. In the 5 team pools, the 1st and 2nd place teams will advance into the Gold Divisional Seeding.

All other teams will be playing in the elimination rounds on Sunday 1/13. The 30 teams will be placed into 2 pools of 3 teams with a cross-over match. Each teamʻs finish on this date will determine itʻs qualification into the 2018 Power League (PL#1) starting on 2/10/19.

All matches will be best of 3 sets to 25 points, win by 2 points with no point cap. Deciding set (If necessary) will be to 15 points (switch sides at 8 points), win by 2 points with no point cap. Each team will have two 30 second timeouts per set. Warmups will be 2 minutes shared, 4 minutes serving team, 4 minutes receiving team.

Pool finish will be determined by
1. Match Percentage
2. Set percentage
3. Point differential

Ties will be determined by the following criteria
2 teams - Head to head results will determine the order of finish
3 teams - If the teams are still tied after match and set percentage and point differential, a card draw will determine the place of finish.

Coaches meeting for ALL AM pools will be at 7:15am at Kekuhaupiʻo. First serve to start promptly at 8am. PM Pools at Keawe (Pool 2) coaches meeting will be at 12:15p at Keawe gym. PM Pools at Kekuhaupiʻo will be at 1:15pm at the tournament desk.

All participants (players and coaches) MUST be registered with USAV. Please bring an updated webpoint roster for your team to your siteʻs coaches meeting and sign and hand to the gym site director. Only rostered staff will be allowed in the team bench area (Per USAV Guidelines). Handwritten rosters will NOT be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Update on Tournament Fees

We have been working with the tournament directors of the Transpacific Championships to coordinate our Power League Qualifier playdates in order to allow for both events to run without conflict. This is to support the growth of our game here in Hawaii and to allow for greater participation and development of these scholar-athletes in our region. Mahalo to Ed and Sivan for our continued discussions in ways to promote and support our large and talented volleyball community in our islands. With this change, our qualifying tournament has moved to 2 days of participation on Sunday 1/6/19 and Sunday 1/13/19.

With this change, we wanted to also modify our fee in order to better support the 2 days of play all teams would be getting. The fee for our qualifying tournament has been lowered to $300 per participating team. We are requesting that a new check for $300 per team be brought to the gym on 1/6/19 and submitted to the Power League Staff upon check-in. There can be one check submitted per club. The original checks will be shredded. Mahalo for your understanding and patience with this matter.
